about

This song is remembering my best friend and former songwriting partner Russell Aylett who was tragically murdered in 2006. This is a look at a certain time in our relationship when we were in our early 20’s and Russ was being let’s say “a bit of a lad” as far as women were concerned. It caused a lot of tension between us at the time and reminiscing about him last year inspired me. However this song might come across I want to make it clear that I loved Russ and he loved me. Friendships often have difficult periods and we had our fair share but that doesn’t change how I feel about him. He was like a brother to me in my teens and twenties. The lyrical outro to the song was added during the recording process as I had felt something was missing. I then heard a podcast interview with Justin Vernon/Bon Iver and during it he said “When you're not chasing your arriving” which immediately made me stop and listen back and I knew right away I had found the line that would tie the song together.

lyrics

I wanted to be wanted
I wanted to be you
But I found out you hate them
And that it wasn’t true
It was a game to you when
Destroying people’s lives
Is that why you were taken
Can’t look me in the eyes

So don’t chase your tail
Or the man in the moon

You could have had it all
Everyone in this place
But you don’t know no better
You preferred the chase

I wanted to be wanted
I wanted to be you
But I found out you hate them
And that it wasn’t true
It was a game to you when
Destroying people’s lives
Is that why you were taken
Can’t look me in the eyes

So don’t chase your tail
Or the man in the moon

You could have had it all
Everyone in this place
But you don’t know no better
You preferred the chase

Did you enjoy the chase more
Than winning the first prize
Did you look way past winning
And not before your eyes
Cause that would make you shallow
Yeah that would make you small
Your falling off your throne to
Not very much at all

Chase dreams
Chase love
Chase real
Chase great

When you stop chasing your arriving
