about

The idea for “Take Me Back” came from hearing “Heart Of Glass” by Blondie a few months ago. It made me start to reminisce about the late 70’s / early 80’s and my first teenage crush Tracey Williams. She was a neighbour and loved Debbie Harry. I was infatuated with Tracey but never told her how I really felt being a shy 14 year old (although I think she might have known?) until eventually she moved away. I’ve often wondered what might have been had i said something? We were good friends though during those days and hung out on the streets around where we lived, teased each other about music a lot and played games like “Run Outs” and “British Bulldog” with a bunch of the other kids from our area. Those were such great memories and they felt like simpler times. So I started jotting down some of the names of those kids, then the songs that soundtracked those days and then the movies and concert tickets we queued for as teenagers. Then a specific memory came to mind of recording the “Top 40” countdown on a Sunday afternoon. Didn’t we all do that as teenagers back then? I started shaping the lyrics around those thoughts and added in questions like “Was life better then?” “Has technology changed things for the better or worse?”

I’m still not sure…

lyrics

Do you remember?
Silly games we would play
Nothing else seemed to matter
We just lived for today
Queuing for heroes right round the block
Blondie The Police
And watching Top Of The Pops
Come what may
But then you had to go away

Take me back
To those times
When we all looked fine
Mistakes we would make
Didn’t block out the sunshine
Back to those streets
Where we would all meet
And laugh about nothing
‘cause nothing was all that we had
Oh God can you just take me back

Do you remember?
99’s in 81
Top 40 Sundays
We were waiting for “Invisible Sun”
Saturday trips
Downtown Record Shops
“To Cut A Long Story Short”
Tennis racquets as guitars
We didn’t care we were together

Take me back
To those times
When we all looked fine
Mistakes we would make
Didn’t block out the sunshine
Back to those streets
Where we would all meet
And laugh about nothing
‘cause nothing was all we that had
Oh God can you just take me back

I’m starting to forget
So tell me I’m not wrong
Didn’t everything feel different
Before “Apple” came along

I’m starting to forget
So tell me I’m not wrong
Didn’t everything feel different
Before “Apple” came along

Oh
Please just take me back

Take me back
To those times
When we all looked fine
Mistakes we would make
Didn’t block out the sunshine
Back to those streets
Where we would all meet
And laugh about nothing
‘cause nothing was all we that had
Oh God can you just take me back

Rewind feeling that
Love for that time
When you take me back

God just take me back
Feeling that
Take me back
Take me back oh yeah
